Laura Ramírez is a ceramic artist based in Madrid, Spain, with a profound connection to craftsmanship. She has always been a hands-on person, exploring various crafts throughout her life. Her artistic journey took a decisive turn when she discovered clay in a class in Sydney, Australia. This experience inspired her to pursue a degree at the National Art School, where she deepened her understanding of ceramics.

After returning to Spain in 2023, Laura established her studio in Madrid, where she continues to explore the possibilities of clay. While studying and living in Australia, she became deeply influenced by the Aboriginal understanding of “Country,” which reflects a profound connection between people, the land, and all living things. This resonated with her own feelings of displacement, having lived away from home and seeking to connect with a sense of belonging.

About

Her sculptural work reflects these themes of displacement and belonging, drawing on organic forms inspired by cellular structures, particularly organelles—the fundamental components shared by all living things. Through her pieces, Laura explores the intricate patterns of life and seeks to connect her background, her understanding of the world, and the joy of working with clay.

Material and process

I work mostly with grogged stoneware, shaping each sculpture gradually through many stages of building and refining. The surfaces are often left unglazed so the raw clay can reveal its own tone and texture.

As the forms develop, I refine the surfaces to bring a sense of clarity and elegance, while leaving subtle traces of the making visible. Those traces connect the finished work back to the rhythm of touch and time that defines each piece.
