About
Laura Ramirez (b. 1979) is a ceramic artist based in Madrid, Spain. After living in Australia for eleven years, she graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Ceramics, from the National Art School in Sydney.
Before relocating to Spain, Laura was awarded third place in the prestigious, Australia-wide Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize, and also received the Matilda Kubany-Deane Memorial Prize in 2022. Her work was showcased at the 2022 BFA Graduation Show at the National Art School, and most recently, in 2024, she participated in the group exhibition 1000 Vases at Galerie Joseph in Paris. Her pieces are held in private collections internationally.
After returning to Spain in 2023, Laura established her studio in Madrid, where she continues to explore the possibilities of clay. Having lived in Australia for eleven years, her experience of moving between places shaped a growing awareness of displacement and belonging. During this time, she encountered the Aboriginal concept of “Country”, which expresses a deep connection between people, land, and all living things. While not a direct framework for her practice, the idea resonated with her own reflections on interconnectedness.
Her sculptural work reflects these themes of displacement and belonging, drawing on organic forms and lamellar structures found across living systems. Through these forms, she explores the shared patterns that connect different forms of life.
Material and Process
I work mostly with grogged stoneware, shaping each sculpture gradually through many stages of building and refining. The surfaces are often left unglazed so the raw clay can reveal its own tone and texture.
As the forms develop, I refine the surfaces to bring a sense of clarity and elegance, while leaving subtle traces of the making visible. Those traces connect the finished work back to the rhythm of touch and time that defines each piece.
